Web Industries Partners with Massachusetts Bay Community College

Web Industries and Massachusetts Bay Community College Join For Unique Training Program Commonwealth.
“Rapid Response” education grant pairs local business with college for first-of-its-kind onsite education initiative.

MARLBOROUGH, MA. – MAY 28, 2013 – Web Industries and Massachusetts Bay Community College have teamed up to develop onsite training tailored to allow employee-owners of the company to receive continuing education as part of their regular work schedule. In addition to ESL classes, the training also offers instruction in statistical process control, team-building skills, and computer software applications. Fourteen Web Industries employees are currently participating in the ESL training. The program is funded by an educational “Rapid Response” grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and a level of matching funds from Web Industries.

To stay relevant in the manufacturing industry, investments made on new equipment need to be matched by investments made in the workforce. As Web Industries continues to focus on partnering with leading companies to develop advanced wound care and IVD devices, next-generation cable components, and composite formatting solutions for thermoset and thermoplastic materials, the company’s employee- owners are developing the skills they need to succeed in the marketplace. Through the partnership with MassBay, training on recent technological advancements and on the latest manufacturing industry business practices is being made available onsite for Web’s workforce.

“It’s no secret that companies trying to hire skilled technical workers are having a difficult time,” said Ron Giard, general manager at Web Industries’ facility in Holliston, MA. “Many of our employees have been here a long time. We saw the need to continue to increase our skill levels while maintaining our existing knowledge base, and working with MassBay allows us to do both of those things.”

The Massachusetts Department of Higher Education “Rapid Response” grant program encourages businesses and colleges to work together to implement workforce education programs within 90 days of a company’s request for training. The program involves 10 local community colleges and nearby companies and is intended to create new opportunities for locally developed, regionally specific jobs and skills training. The long-term goal is to help companies stay competitive and rooted in the state; having an experienced, educated workforce will help meet that goal.

“This is a perfect example of how the Commonwealth supports partnerships between our community colleges and business and industry to drive economic development in Massachusetts,” MassBay president John O’Donnell said. “When Web Industries expressed their training and education needs to us, MassBay quickly developed training modules for their needs.”

The program developed by Web Industries and MassBay kicked off on May 14. Employees attend classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Holliston facility. Web Industries executives hope that the program will inspire their workforce to pursue further campus-based, credit-bearing coursework applicable towards college degrees.

Don Romine, president and CEO of Web Industries, remarked: “I’m extremely grateful to the Commonwealth and MassBay for supporting us in developing such a unique program. Web Industries, Bill Holt, Bruce Bumpus, and Ron Giard have worked hard over the last year and half on developing this program with Carol Staffier, dean at MassBay CC, and Cheryl West, director of grant development. I’m grateful for that, and it is exciting to see it come to fruition. As an employee-owned company, it is more than just coming to work to make a paycheck for our employees. We all have a vested interest in the work we do. This helps to create a healthy, supportive, and successful work culture.”
