Omega Systèmes, a Web Industries company, expands composite formatting capabilities to meet the increasing demands of future aerospace programs

MARLBOROUGH, Massachusetts, USA, July 5, 2022-- To support European aerospace’s goal to reduce the environmental footprint of the air transport sector while increasing global competitiveness, Omega Systèmes – Web Industries has installed and commissioned a thermoset slitting line at its European Center of Excellence. This investment was partially funded by a grant awarded to Omega Systèmes under the France Relance [Recovery] plan.

This production-proven line will be dedicated to efficiently manufacture spooled thermoset slit tape within a controlled aerospace-grade environment. This new line will provide improved material yields with reduced associated waste for end-use customers while maintaining Web’s high standard of slit tape quality.

The new line expands the company’s existing composite cutting & kitting and thermoplastic slitting services, and it will enable Web Industries to meet the increasing demands of its customers and partners for aerospace-quality services regardless of the material input and output formats. 

Equipment Capabilities

This line converts master rolls of thermoset materials into precision width slit tapes ranging from 3mm to 12.7mm and wound onto long-length spools. Output formats are customized to conform to application specifications, winding patterns, size and weight constraints, and additional material requirements. This technology is qualified for all major AFP systems and joins existing slitting lines at the Nantes site that are also qualified for all AFP and automated tape laying (ATL) systems.

The European Center of Excellence for Composites Processing 

Our Center of Excellence in Nantes offers the European market access to technical teams and pilot lines to support the demonstration and rapid development, testing, and qualification of different composite materials. The facility features thermoset and thermoplastic formatting lines with commercial-scale capacities and processes ready to support the commercialization of materials used in primary and secondary structures for emerging aerospace and space projects.

Web Industries announces Sebastian Fehl as Director of European Operations

Web Industries is pleased to announce the appointment of Sebastian Fehl as Director of European Operations for Web Industries.

Sebastian will now manage the company’s Web Stade, Germany, Omega Systemes Atlantique, and Omega Systemes Aquitaine, France, plants.

Sebastian joined Web Industries in Stade, Germany, eight years ago, managing Research and Technology activities. He has held Site Manager and General Manager positions since 2018, operating in aerospace markets for major European aerospace programs. 

Sebastian brings to his new position over fourteen years of experience working across all areas of high-performance composites and advanced technologies for cutting and converting materials in Europe.

Jason Surman, Web’s VP of Aerospace, commented, “Sebastian brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this important position, with a successful background in growing businesses and delivering excellent customer experience on demanding aerospace programs. New president will position Web Industries for the next growth stage

MARLBOROUGH, Mass., March 29, 2022—Web Industries Inc., a leading global provider of contract converting and turnkey manufacturing services, announced today that John S. Madej has joined the company as president. He will report to Mark Pihl, who will continue in his current role as chief executive officer.

Madej joins Web Industries from Hollingsworth & Vose (H&V), where he most recently served as chief operating officer and previously as chief financial officer. He joined H&V in 2009 as vice president and general manager of the Energy and Industrial Systems Business Unit. He was also the division president of the Engine and Industrial Filtration Division.

For more than 24 years, Madej served in a variety of leadership roles at General Electric (GE). He was president and CEO of Exatec LLC, a GE-Bayer joint venture. He also served as a product general manager based in Tokyo, Japan, for four years. Preceding his overseas assignment for GE, Madej held foundational positions in sales and market team leadership in multiple industry segments ranging from business equipment to automotive. Madej earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Union College.

MARLBOROUGH, Mass., February 16, 2022—Satellite manufacturers in need of exceptionally high levels of foreign object debris (FOD) protection in multi-layer insulation (MLI) blankets can now acquire it via Web Industries’ new MLI blanket cleaning service.

The service meets the IEST-STD-CC1246* standard. It is recommended for Web Industries’ MLI blankets used in satellite applications where FOD, such as dirt, grease, human sweat or oils, could seriously impact a satellite component’s performance. An example: satellite camera functionality can be impaired if FOD or other contaminants outgas during launch and deployment, occluding the camera lens.

The specialized MLI blanket cleaning service is an option for MLI customers who require exceptional levels of disinfection and cleanliness. Web Industries engaged an industrial hygiene specialist to help implement optimal, safe cleaning procedures at its Denton, Texas, MLI blanket manufacturing facility. Omega Systèmes’ GM cites strategic value chain expertise as key to grant selection

MARLBOROUGH, Massachusetts, USA, March 10, 2021 – Omega Systèmes, a Web Industries company, has been awarded a grant by the France Relance [Recovery] plan for the design and development of aeronautic thermoset and thermoplastic slitting solutions.

Funds from the grant will modernize and automate Omega Systèmes' equipment at its Nantes plant. The plant will supply next-generation aircraft manufacturers and contribute to the industry's economic rebound from the consequences of the COVID-19 crisis.

Under the grant’s project, OMEGA-WEB 2022, Omega Systèmes will design and develop in France innovative solutions for slitting thermoplastics and thermoset composite materials. Central to the project will be in-line automated inspection to support French and European R&D projects and the large-scale production of composite parts by AFP (Automated Fiber Placement) and ATL (Automated Tape Laying). The company will deliver higher value-added products to the market that meet the requirements of future aeronautical programs.

According to Omega Systèmes General Manager Jim Sharkey, France Relance awarded the grant based largely on Omega’s strategic value chain expertise. “We can accelerate the time to market from material selection and management to the cutting, packaging and delivery of materials,” Sharkey says. “Plus, Web can deliver scale to its aerospace customers, and at a reduced cost, to accelerate composites materials’ speed to market.”

Omega Systèmes has manufacturing locations in Nantes and Bordeaux, in the heart of France’s aircraft manufacturing region, and is supported by Web Industries in Stade, Germany and its six North American plants. Nantes is home to Omega Systèmes’ European Center of Excellence for Composite Development & Commercialization. It provides the European market with access to technical teams, material quality control and pilot lines for demonstration, rapid development, testing and qualification of composite material formats.

 “We supply Tier 1 and Tier 2 aerospace equipment manufacturers,” Sharkey notes. “Having unique capabilities in France and Europe, and with a Center of Excellence for thermoplastic and thermosetting composites, allows us to offer the market increased production capacity and supply for new aircraft programs designed with primary and secondary composite structures. We will help OEMs reduce aircraft weight, improve their carbon footprint and offer price-competitive products. Our high-performance cutting capabilities, for example, increase productivity by a factor of 5 for the supply of precision slit tape delivered in spooled form.”

According to France Relance documentation, its funding is aimed at “accelerating the diversification, modernization, and ecological transformation of the aeronautics...[sector].” Investment support and assistance for the aeronautics sector was announced on September 3, 2020, by Bruno Le Maire, Minister of Economics, Finance and Recovery.

“France Relance lists innovation and modernization as two primary goals,” Sharkey reports.

“With our state-of-the-art solutions for the slitting of thermoplastic and thermosetting composite materials, Omega Systèmes is uniquely equipped to support France’s aeronautics sector in achieving these critical goals.”

Omega Systèmes is currently addressing three composite slitting objectives as specified by the grant:

  1. Optimizing the slitting of thermoplastics by creating new formats and parameters, and specifying exclusive blades system with improved cutting capabilities 
  2. Developing a new composites splicing system and test bench
  3. Developing slit-width monitoring and foreign object debris (FOD) detection systems

Companies throughout the nonwovens industry worked overtime to help save lives during the past 12 months

By the fall of 2020, needs in the U.S. for personal protection equipment (PPE) had reached critical status. Web Industries responded to the national manufacturing crisis by repurposing composite material cutting lines at three plants to produce disposable protective isolation gowns by the millions in a matter of months.

The company reconfigured cutting equipment at its Atlanta, GA, Denton, TX and Middlesex, VT, facilities that had been used to format materials for aerospace applications. The conversion involved recalibrating the lines to accommodate the nonwoven surgical gown material and was completed in a matter of days.

According to market development and strategy manager, Ralph Tricomi, staffing to meet the sudden influx of huge orders for nonwoven protective isolation gowns was among Web Industries’ biggest challenges.

“Our human resources department at each plant undertook an intensive recruiting effort to attract and hire skilled operations personnel,” Tricomi says. “Overall, there was a unified, interdisciplinary effort among three plants to produce gowns necessary to help protect lives and get America back to work.”

Viewpoint: Web Industries lays out the case for contract manufacturing at a time when flexibility, speed and product innovation are necessary to achieve low costs

WILMOT, NH, Feb. 11, 2021 (Nonwovens Markets) - When the emergence of a global pandemic forced medical institutions and ordinary people to scramble to source facemasks and other personal protective equipment (PPEs), manufacturers throughout the PPE supply chain were confronted by a challenge they had never prepared for: how to scale production capacity and, in many cases, move into new product areas.

More recently, companies and governments have wrestled with a new problem: how to ensure surge capacity to make products with demand that is high initially, but which might decline quickly and not be necessary until the next emergency.

What they do for a living. For a company like Marlborough, Massachusetts-based Web Industries, this sounds like a perfect illustration of the need for a contract manufacturing organization (CMO).

Most of the time, Web Industries is not helping companies deal with global emergencies; a more typical situation is where a brand owner or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) decides it wants to launch a product or family of products or change its geographical distribution but isn't capable of doing the work internally.

Enter the contract manufacturer.

Nonwovens Markets recently spoke with a team of executives from Web Industries, who made the case that outsourced manufacturing can open new opportunities for brand owners and other customers for the right situation.

In the conversation were Ed Martins, vice president, Industrial &Consumer Division; Dante P. Ercoli, director of sales and business development, and Ken Sheets, plant manager for the division's Fort Wayne, Indiana site.

Making a big difference. The Web Industries executives pointed to a few areas where their company can make a big difference for its customers.

Most obvious is having the equipment and trained staff to quickly manufacture a new product. Others include relationships with equipment vendors and raw materials suppliers to make decisions and implement them quickly, and product design and engineering capabilities to allow for quick and cost-effective scale-up and commercialization.

A related area is their ability to take the lead in brainstorming product development ideas with customers, often extending to the supply chain to ensure that risks and opportunities are highlighted before final product manufacturing and marketing decisions are made.

Examples from PPE supply chain. While the value a contract manufacturer brings to customers was the main topic of the interview, the global drive to strengthen the PPE supply chain and onshore production provided numerous examples of how CMOs play a vital part in the rapid deployment of domestic PPE manufacturing. The executives noted that the increased demand for facemasks was unexpected both domestically and internationally when the COVID-19 virus hit. They pointed out that in many cases CMOs had the equipment and the ability to ramp up production without having to design, order, install and test new production capacity.

Trained staff already exists. They also said, "Our customers realize more value in the operational and intellectual knowledge and infrastructure we bring. So, while a CMO has the equipment needed for scaling production rapidly, they also have the trained staff prepared to operate it.”

They pointed out, a company like Web Industries also has the materials science and engineering knowledge in-house that is relevant to manufacturing the brand owner’s products.

In-house engineering. In some cases, when a new product development effort is required, the CMO will supplement the brand owner’s in-house engineering capability when it is insufficient to develop and commercialize the product. In fact, using a contract manufacturer often allows a customer to avoid the investment in a large engineering department.

Additionally, the contract manufacturer will have established relationships with equipment vendors and raw materials suppliers and be able to bring them into the development discussion.

In the words of one team member, "Many times [following] our early on conversations with customers, the product looks very different by the time it is commercialized as opposed to the initial concept. So, the CMO’s flexibility proves to be key in those situations."

Testing and certification labs. The interviewees commented that they have had jobs where the brand owner was working with multiple contract manufacturers. In that situation, a brand owner may not have the experience to bring staffs at multiple locations up to speed on technical issues. "How do you bring the knowledge level of those other [contract manufacturers] up to where they need to be in order to continue at the speed-to-market that's important?"

A contract manufacturer like Web Industries has established relationships with testing and certification laboratories, which is extremely important for speed-to-market. Without those relationships, the lead times can really slow down the process and the pace.

Risk mitigation. Another issue for a brand owner, according to the executives, is risk mitigation. When a brand owner thinks about potentially investing in the infrastructure, to bring a new product to market or enter a new sector, there is a lot to consider. And it's not just capital investment. Every aspect of an organization is in play: "You need to have the confidence you can scale at a pace that meets market demand and needs.  CMO’s are used to this and can help to mitigate this risk for a brand owner or OEM."

Simplify the task. Personal protective equipment is often meant to be a temporary project. Many companies are questioning what the addressable market will be for any one of the different products, e.g., masks, gowns and headgear post pandemic.

In a case where a customer believes an operation will be short lived, the contract manufacturer can greatly simplify the task of scaling the business and then backing out if the demand goes away.

Imports versus domestic. Another question is the role of imports versus domestic supply in the PPE supply chain. With the onshoring initiative many countries have undertaken to strengthen their domestic capability if another pandemic were to occur, using a contract manufacturer allows a PPE maker to scale fast and develop a longer-term strategy.

Even if a new business is permanent, often contract manufacturer's customers may have a corporate philosophy emphasizing large volumes and minimizing complexity in their operations. A contract manufacturer allows outsourcing of this operational complexity.

Example of velocity. Certainly, velocity is one thing many people think about when looking at contract manufacturers. The executives cited an example from their own past where speed-to-market was a key issue.

"Approximately 10 years ago, one of our major customers approached us about a pipeline process for a product that involved nonwovens that went into a toddler training pant. They had worked this out on a pilot scale and approached us because of our development capabilities, speed to market, and ability to scale their product.

"They transferred their technology and knowledge to us, and requested that we develop the production scale to meet their anticipated commercial demand. It was only three months from issuing a purchase order for equipment to running go-to-market qualification trials. Well, we've continued to run this product for 10 years, and their comments back to us [are that] they come to Web for these kinds of things because there's no way that they could have gone through their bureaucracy to scale this up and staff it and commercialize it as Web did. There's just no way. That's why they turn to Web, because they know we can get things done quickly like this."

The executives also said that speed-to-market and fast change of direction are arguments for using a domestic contract manufacturer, rather than going offshore looking for low variable costs at the expense of reduced flexibility and a longer, more rigid supply chain.

Web Industries Inc., a precision converter and contract manufacturing organization (CMO), has been named Manufacturer of the Year for the Eighth Middlesex District by the Massachusetts Legislative Manufacturing Caucus. A framed certificate commemorating the award was presented to Web Industries President & CEO Mark Pihl by Representative Carolyn Dykema at the company’s Holliston, Mass., plant in conjunction with the Massachusetts State Legislative Manufacturing Caucus’s “Reimagined” 5th Annual Manufacturing Awards Ceremony.

The term “reimagined” indicates that this year’s awards ceremony was held virtually. Fittingly, the award was presented during October, Massachusetts’ official Manufacturing Month.

According to Pihl, Web Industries and the Eighth Middlesex District have a mutually beneficial relationship.

“We have enjoyed the support of Representative Dykema and local government,” Pihl says, “and that has reinforced our efforts to ramp up production of lateral flow immunoassay (LFI) COVID-19 rapid diagnostic tests and hire hundreds of employees at our Holliston LFI Center of Excellence. Ultimately, this contributes to the district’s, the Commonwealth’s and the nation’s economic vitality while helping us to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and return the country safely back to work.”

Web Industries upgrades National Composites Centre membership to Tier 2 status

Web Industries Inc., a precision formatter of advanced materials including high-performance composites for aerospace, defense and industrial markets, has deepened its involvement with the National Composites Centre (NCC) by upgrading from associate to Tier 2 membership. The enhanced status enables Web to take greater advantage of NCC’s formidable design and manufacturing capabilities and to collaborate more actively with other NCC members in early-stage development of new composite formatting solutions.

Based in Bristol, United Kingdom, the NCC supports the development of new processes and technologies for the design and manufacture of advanced composite products. The Centre boasts state-of-the-art equipment and industrial-scale manufacturing facilities and enables member companies to develop, adapt and validate new and existing processes and technologies.

As a Tier 2 member, Web Industries will be able to initiate research programs involving new composite formatting solutions and to collaborate from the design stage with other NCC members, including composite material suppliers, equipment manufacturers, aerospace parts suppliers and OEMs. In addition, Web will have access to high-quality composite materials and specialized software programs from industry-leading suppliers.

Supporting Omega Systèmes Acquisition

According to Patrick Markert, Web Industries’ head of business development, Europe, Web’s upgraded NCC status complements its recent acquisition of Omega Systèmes Atlantique and Aquitaine, a highly respected precision formatter with production sites in Nantes and Bordeaux, France. The acquisition is part of Web’s strategy to support its aerospace customers’ demands for formatting and materials management services.

Omega Systèmes, a Web Industries company announces contract extension with Airbus

Omega Systèmes, a Web Industries company – has signed a three-year contract extension with Airbus covering the manufacture, supply and processing of high-precision composite materials. The contract includes material management, cutting services, storage and the delivery of composite parts for major fly and non-fly materials programs. It becomes effective immediately and extends a long relationship that Omega Systems has had with Airbus for another three years. Omega Systèmes is a Tier 1 supplier to Airbus. The contract remains in effect until December 31, 2021.

The extended contract covers the A320, A330, A350, A400M, ATR and other programs for Airbus Europe entities requiring fly and non-fly materials, including those for the Airbus Defence & Space and Airbus Helicopters divisions.

Omega Systèmes is a precision formatter of flexible thermoplastic composite materials for next-generation aerospace applications.
According to Vice President of Corporate Development for Web Industries Kevin Young, the contract extension was awarded based on Omega Systèmes sterling performance during its current contract.

Indeed, for more than 20 years Omega Systèmes and Airbus have collaborated on major aeronautics programs with the supply of fly and non-fly materials. Omega Systèmes is a supplier of very high reliability and quality products that meet the aeronautic industry’s most demanding requirements.
