Equipment Capabilities

This line converts master rolls of thermoset materials into precision width slit tapes ranging from 3mm to 12.7mm and wound onto long-length spools. Output formats are customized to conform to application specifications, winding patterns, size and weight constraints, and additional material requirements. This technology is qualified for all major AFP systems and joins existing slitting lines at the Nantes site that are also qualified for all AFP and automated tape laying (ATL) systems.

The European Center of Excellence for Composites Processing

Our Center of Excellence in Nantes offers the European market access to technical teams and pilot lines to support the demonstration and rapid development, testing, and qualification of different composite materials. The facility features thermoset and thermoplastic formatting lines with commercial-scale capacities and processes ready to support the commercialization of materials used in primary and secondary structures for emerging aerospace and space projects.

“We will deliver higher-value products to the market that meet the requirements of future aircraft programs. Customers will benefit from our large-scale aerospace-quality production capacities, allowing them to reduce costs through economies of scale and get their products to market faster,” stated Sebastian Fehl, Web Industries’ Director of Operations for Europe. “We are continuously investing in providing the best production standards to our supply chain partners. The addition of this capability at Omega Systèmes now offers our customers in Europe a full range of production scale material formats to support AFP, ATL, and hand layup of thermoset and thermoplastic composite materials.”

Web Industries’ ongoing investment in and development of new technologies, backed by the modernization of its facilities, reinforces the company’s position as a key supply chain partner for European commercial aerospace programs.

Ralph Tricomi Appears In Medical Product Outsourcing's "Material Trends: The Impact of New Medtech Innovation."

March 03, 2022

Ralph Tricomi, director of market development, appears in Medical Product Outsourcing's article, "Material Trends: The Impact of New Medtech Innovation."

“The medical adhesive is crucial for multilayer laminated materials, and adhesive material suppliers are in touch with the market’s need for conformability, biocompatibility, and in some cases, transparency. We work closely with OEMs to help them determine the optimal way to laminate different materials together,” explained Ralph Tricomi, director, market development, for Web Industries Inc., a Marlborough, Mass.-based contract manufacturing firm offering precision converting and outsourced manufacturing services. “To help customers make multilayer products incorporating electronics, we have equipment to print on a substrate, do the multilayer lamination and then die cutting, island placement, or other converting processes. Advanced adhesives often are the method of choice to bond these layers together.”

“There is a convergence of chemistry, electronics, and medical devices in the development of solutions to improve quality of life through early disease detection and diagnosis of maladies. We are seeing greater integration of electrical circuits and multielectrode arrays into flexible, medical-grade materials,” he continued. “These materials then are used in testing devices and medical wearables with increasingly sophisticated detection capabilities and digital connectivity.”

Web Industries Introduces Multi-layer Insulation (MLI) Blanket Cleaning Services for High-level FOD Control

February 16, 2022

Applications include MLI blankets that protect satellite components

MARLBOROUGH, Mass., February 16, 2022—Satellite manufacturers in need of exceptionally high levels of foreign object debris (FOD) protection in multi-layer insulation (MLI) blankets can now acquire it via Web Industries’ new MLI blanket cleaning service.

The service meets the IEST-STD-CC1246* standard. It is recommended for Web Industries’ MLI blankets used in satellite applications where FOD, such as dirt, grease, human sweat or oils, could seriously impact a satellite component’s performance. An example: satellite camera functionality can be impaired if FOD or other contaminants outgas during launch and deployment, occluding the camera lens.

The specialized MLI blanket cleaning service is an option for MLI customers who require exceptional levels of disinfection and cleanliness. Web Industries engaged an industrial hygiene specialist to help implement optimal, safe cleaning procedures at its Denton, Texas, MLI blanket manufacturing facility. These include use of isopropyl alcohol for chemically cleansing MLI blankets.

France Relance. Aeronautics. awards grant to Omega Systèmes, a Web Industries company, for automated composites slitting

March 10, 2021

Omega Systèmes’ GM cites strategic value chain expertise as key to grant selection

MARLBOROUGH, Massachusetts, USA, March 10, 2021 – Omega Systèmes, a Web Industries company, has been awarded a grant by the France Relance [Recovery] plan for the design and development of aeronautic thermoset and thermoplastic slitting solutions.

Funds from the grant will modernize and automate Omega Systèmes' equipment at its Nantes plant. The plant will supply next-generation aircraft manufacturers and contribute to the industry's economic rebound from the consequences of the COVID-19 crisis.

Under the grant’s project, OMEGA-WEB 2022, Omega Systèmes will design and develop in France innovative solutions for slitting thermoplastics and thermoset composite materials. Central to the project will be in-line automated inspection to support French and European R&D projects and the large-scale production of composite parts by AFP (Automated Fiber Placement) and ATL (Automated Tape Laying). The company will deliver higher value-added products to the market that meet the requirements of future aeronautical programs.

According to Omega Systèmes General Manager Jim Sharkey, France Relance awarded the grant based largely on Omega’s strategic value chain expertise. “We can accelerate the time to market from material selection and management to the cutting, packaging and delivery of materials,” Sharkey says. “Plus, Web can deliver scale to its aerospace customers, and at a reduced cost, to accelerate composites materials’ speed to market.”

Omega Systèmes has manufacturing locations in Nantes and Bordeaux, in the heart of France’s aircraft manufacturing region, and is supported by Web Industries in Stade, Germany and its six North American plants. Nantes is home to Omega Systèmes’ European Center of Excellence for Composite Development & Commercialization. It provides the European market with access to technical teams, material quality control and pilot lines for demonstration, rapid development, testing and qualification of composite material formats.

“We supply Tier 1 and Tier 2 aerospace equipment manufacturers,” Sharkey notes. “Having unique capabilities in France and Europe, and with a Center of Excellence for thermoplastic and thermosetting composites, allows us to offer the market increased production capacity and supply for new aircraft programs designed with primary and secondary composite structures. We will help OEMs reduce aircraft weight, improve their carbon footprint and offer price-competitive products. Our high-performance cutting capabilities, for example, increase productivity by a factor of 5 for the supply of precision slit tape delivered in spooled form.”

According to France Relance documentation, its funding is aimed at “accelerating the diversification, modernization, and ecological transformation of the aeronautics...[sector].” Investment support and assistance for the aeronautics sector was announced on September 3, 2020, by Bruno Le Maire, Minister of Economics, Finance and Recovery.

“France Relance lists innovation and modernization as two primary goals,” Sharkey reports.

“With our state-of-the-art solutions for the slitting of thermoplastic and thermosetting composite materials, Omega Systèmes is uniquely equipped to support France’s aeronautics sector in achieving these critical goals.”

Omega Systèmes is currently addressing three composite slitting objectives as specified by the grant:

  1. Optimizing the slitting of thermoplastics by creating new formats and parameters, and specifying exclusive blades system with improved cutting capabilities
  2. Developing a new composites splicing system and test bench
  3. Developing slit-width monitoring and foreign object debris (FOD) detection systems

Nonwovens Step Up

March 04, 2021

Companies throughout the nonwovens industry worked overtime to help save lives during the past 12 months

By the fall of 2020, needs in the U.S. for personal protection equipment (PPE) had reached critical status. Web Industries responded to the national manufacturing crisis by repurposing composite material cutting lines at three plants to produce disposable protective isolation gowns by the millions in a matter of months.

The company reconfigured cutting equipment at its Atlanta, GA, Denton, TX and Middlesex, VT, facilities that had been used to format materials for aerospace applications. The conversion involved recalibrating the lines to accommodate the nonwoven surgical gown material and was completed in a matter of days.

According to market development and strategy manager, Ralph Tricomi, staffing to meet the sudden influx of huge orders for nonwoven protective isolation gowns was among Web Industries’ biggest challenges.

“Our human resources department at each plant undertook an intensive recruiting effort to attract and hire skilled operations personnel,” Tricomi says. “Overall, there was a unified, interdisciplinary effort among three plants to produce gowns necessary to help protect lives and get America back to work.”

Viewpoint: Web Industries lays out the case for contract manufacturing at a time when flexibility, speed and product innovation are necessary to achieve low costs

February 11, 2021

WILMOT, NH, Feb. 11, 2021 (Nonwovens Markets) - When the emergence of a global pandemic forced medical institutions and ordinary people to scramble to source facemasks and other personal protective equipment (PPEs), manufacturers throughout the PPE supply chain were confronted by a challenge they had never prepared for: how to scale production capacity and, in many cases, move into new product areas.

More recently, companies and governments have wrestled with a new problem: how to ensure surge capacity to make products with demand that is high initially, but which might decline quickly and not be necessary until the next emergency.

What they do for a living. For a company like Marlborough, Massachusetts-based Web Industries, this sounds like a perfect illustration of the need for a contract manufacturing organization (CMO).

Most of the time, Web Industries is not helping companies deal with global emergencies; a more typical situation is where a brand owner or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) decides it wants to launch a product or family of products or change its geographical distribution but isn't capable of doing the work internally.

Enter the contract manufacturer.

Nonwovens Markets recently spoke with a team of executives from Web Industries, who made the case that outsourced manufacturing can open new opportunities for brand owners and other customers for the right situation.

In the conversation were Ed Martins, vice president, Industrial &Consumer Division; Dante P. Ercoli, director of sales and business development, and Ken Sheets, plant manager for the division's Fort Wayne, Indiana site.

Making a big difference. The Web Industries executives pointed to a few areas where their company can make a big difference for its customers.

Most obvious is having the equipment and trained staff to quickly manufacture a new product. Others include relationships with equipment vendors and raw materials suppliers to make decisions and implement them quickly, and product design and engineering capabilities to allow for quick and cost-effective scale-up and commercialization.

A related area is their ability to take the lead in brainstorming product development ideas with customers, often extending to the supply chain to ensure that risks and opportunities are highlighted before final product manufacturing and marketing decisions are made.

Examples from PPE supply chain. While the value a contract manufacturer brings to customers was the main topic of the interview, the global drive to strengthen the PPE supply chain and onshore production provided numerous examples of how CMOs play a vital part in the rapid deployment of domestic PPE manufacturing. The executives noted that the increased demand for facemasks was unexpected both domestically and internationally when the COVID-19 virus hit. They pointed out that in many cases CMOs had the equipment and the ability to ramp up production without having to design, order, install and test new production capacity.

Trained staff already exists. They also said, "Our customers realize more value in the operational and intellectual knowledge and infrastructure we bring. So, while a CMO has the equipment needed for scaling production rapidly, they also have the trained staff prepared to operate it.”

They pointed out, a company like Web Industries also has the materials science and engineering knowledge in-house that is relevant to manufacturing the brand owner’s products.

In-house engineering. In some cases, when a new product development effort is required, the CMO will supplement the brand owner’s in-house engineering capability when it is insufficient to develop and commercialize the product. In fact, using a contract manufacturer often allows a customer to avoid the investment in a large engineering department.

Additionally, the contract manufacturer will have established relationships with equipment vendors and raw materials suppliers and be able to bring them into the development discussion.

In the words of one team member, "Many times [following] our early on conversations with customers, the product looks very different by the time it is commercialized as opposed to the initial concept. So, the CMO’s flexibility proves to be key in those situations."

Testing and certification labs. The interviewees commented that they have had jobs where the brand owner was working with multiple contract manufacturers. In that situation, a brand owner may not have the experience to bring staffs at multiple locations up to speed on technical issues. "How do you bring the knowledge level of those other [contract manufacturers] up to where they need to be in order to continue at the speed-to-market that's important?"

A contract manufacturer like Web Industries has established relationships with testing and certification laboratories, which is extremely important for speed-to-market. Without those relationships, the lead times can really slow down the process and the pace.

Risk mitigation. Another issue for a brand owner, according to the executives, is risk mitigation. When a brand owner thinks about potentially investing in the infrastructure, to bring a new product to market or enter a new sector, there is a lot to consider. And it's not just capital investment. Every aspect of an organization is in play: "You need to have the confidence you can scale at a pace that meets market demand and needs.  CMO’s are used to this and can help to mitigate this risk for a brand owner or OEM."

Simplify the task. Personal protective equipment is often meant to be a temporary project. Many companies are questioning what the addressable market will be for any one of the different products, e.g., masks, gowns and headgear post pandemic.

In a case where a customer believes an operation will be short lived, the contract manufacturer can greatly simplify the task of scaling the business and then backing out if the demand goes away.

Imports versus domestic. Another question is the role of imports versus domestic supply in the PPE supply chain. With the onshoring initiative many countries have undertaken to strengthen their domestic capability if another pandemic were to occur, using a contract manufacturer allows a PPE maker to scale fast and develop a longer-term strategy.

Even if a new business is permanent, often contract manufacturer's customers may have a corporate philosophy emphasizing large volumes and minimizing complexity in their operations. A contract manufacturer allows outsourcing of this operational complexity.

Example of velocity. Certainly, velocity is one thing many people think about when looking at contract manufacturers. The executives cited an example from their own past where speed-to-market was a key issue.

"Approximately 10 years ago, one of our major customers approached us about a pipeline process for a product that involved nonwovens that went into a toddler training pant. They had worked this out on a pilot scale and approached us because of our development capabilities, speed to market, and ability to scale their product.

"They transferred their technology and knowledge to us, and requested that we develop the production scale to meet their anticipated commercial demand. It was only three months from issuing a purchase order for equipment to running go-to-market qualification trials. Well, we've continued to run this product for 10 years, and their comments back to us [are that] they come to Web for these kinds of things because there's no way that they could have gone through their bureaucracy to scale this up and staff it and commercialize it as Web did. There's just no way. That's why they turn to Web, because they know we can get things done quickly like this."

The executives also said that speed-to-market and fast change of direction are arguments for using a domestic contract manufacturer, rather than going offshore looking for low variable costs at the expense of reduced flexibility and a longer, more rigid supply chain.

Knowledge puts the “smart” in smart-contract manufacturing

December 16, 2020

Web Industries’ VP of Corporate Development & Medical, Kevin Young, and Market Development and Strategy Manager, Ralph Tricomi, explain how experienced contractors can drive PPE and LFI tests rapidly.

Smart manufacturing means different things in different contexts. In the age of COVID-19, when US medical device manufacturers and makers of PPE are working under government mandates to reshore production of tests, gowns, masks and curtains from Asia, ‘smart’ means knowing how to earn Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the tests, ramp up production and bring a product to market in a hurry.

Web Industries to Expand Multi-layer Insulation (MLI) and Composite Ply Cutting Operations at Denton, Texas, Facility

July 12, 2019

Web Industries Inc., a precision formatter of advanced composites materials for aerospace, space and medical applications, is implementing a major expansion of its Denton, Texas, manufacturing facility. The expansion will increase the plant’s productive capacity, smooth the flow of manufacturing activities and help support larger customer programs.

According to Ben Winters, general manager of Web Industries’ CAD Cut Services business unit, the $1.5-million project will add 20,000 square feet of manufacturing space to the facility, nearly doubling its size, and create new multi-layer insulation (MLI) and composite ply cutting production cells.

The project will leave current production activities at Denton unaffected and is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2020.

“The completed expansion will transform Web Denton into one of the company’s Centers of Excellence, joining other Web manufacturing hubs such as Atlanta, Ga., and Montpelier, Vt.,” says Winters. “With the Denton expansion and the recent acquisition of Omega Systèmes, which has manufacturing facilities in Nantes and Bordeaux, France, Web has strengthened its position as the leading precision formatter globally for aerospace, space, medical and related applications.”

Two-Phase Project

The Denton expansion will take place in two phases. Phase one involves creation of a 10,000-square-foot production area for the cutting and assembly of MLI blankets. These are multi-layer components that provide thermal insulation in space vehicles such as satellites and rockets, and in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines used in medical applications. The new area will be equipped with computer-controlled automated cutting tables and industrial sewing machines for blanket assembly.

“We’ve seen a surge in demand for MLI thermal solutions due to the new ‘space race’ and the launch of numerous small satellites,” comments Winters. “The expanded MLI production area at Denton will help us meet both current and anticipated demand for MLI and other thermal solutions. The addition of sewing capabilities positions us to supply completely finished products ready for installation at the launch pad.”

The expansion’s second phase centers on a new composites ply cutting and kitting area, which will format materials for aerospace engines and related applications. Also slated for expansion are Denton’s administrative offices and employee training facilities. In addition, the project gives Web the space and flexibility to install more freezers in the future for the proper storage of composite materials before processing.

Web Industries to Build Seattle-area Composites Formatting Plant that will Speed Slit Tapes Delivery to Boeing

July 31, 2019

Aerospace original equipment manufacturers (OEM) in the U.S. Pacific Northwest will soon have a nearby source of precision-formatted composite materials from Web Industries Inc. The company has unveiled plans for a new plant near Seattle that will help aerospace manufacturers, including Boeing, to optimize supply chains and dramatically cut shipping time and inventory.

Situated on 12 acres in Marysville, Wash., the new production facility will supply composite slit tape for the Boeing 777X and position Web to provide responsive formatting services to other businesses in the region.

The plant is expected to be operational following construction, equipment qualification and employee training. It is located close to Boeing’s final assembly plant in Everett, Wash., and supplier Toray Composite Materials America’s (CMA) processing facility in Tacoma, Wash.

“Our new composites formatting facility is the realization of our commercial commitment to Toray and Boeing,” says Web Industries President and CEO Mark Pihl. “By providing localized manufacturing to support the 777X, Boeing and Toray are expected to see improved affordability and sustainable competitive advantages. There are benefits associated with lower transportation, packaging and inventory costs, as well as reduced lead times. We look forward to the innovation and continuous improvement focus that will come with close collaboration.”

The new plant will reduce freight transportation time between Web and Boeing facilities to less than 30 minutes and to roughly two hours between Web and Toray. The materials currently make a cross-country journey by freezer truck.

Boeing could realize additional benefits via inventory savings. Web now ships formatted tapes to Boeing twice per month. When the new plant is operational, smaller shipments will be delivered as often as twice per day, which will require less handling and storage at Boeing. The expectation is to achieve a just in time service model.

Toray, too, will enjoy advantages associated with Web’s new nearby location. “Web has been a long-standing partner of Toray and enabled us to expand our product portfolio of advanced materials with great results, says Don Myers, director of aerospace sales, Toray CMA. “We look forward to continuing our work with Web Industries as they start up their facility in Marysville.”

The manufacturing site, which will house:

  • 75,000 square feet for Web’s custom-built precision slitting, winding and spooling operations;
  • Space to add product development and composite material ply cutting and kitting services.

“Web will profit by adding value to our existing products and services and gaining entrée to new business opportunities with aerospace manufacturing companies throughout the Northwest region,” says Pihl. “With our technical resources based locally, we will offer the ability to collaborate on new business development and help our customers enable their own growth strategies.”

Web Industries’ Variance-in-Repeat Printing Creates Irregularly-Spaced Designs on Nonwovens Used in Personal Care Products

February 10, 2020

A printing capability for nonwoven materials that creates multiple repeat designs in the same print run is now available from the Personal & Home Care business unit of Web Industries Inc., a precision formatter of flexible materials. Field-tested variance-in-repeat printing delivers marketing and production advantages to manufacturers of personal care items such as adult incontinence wear, feminine care products and diapers.

The printing capability empowers brands to bring a variety of designs to market, rather than a single uniform design. For example, design images of flowers can be varied by location instead of appearing in the same place every time. Variations in images, colors or text are available.

“Our variance-in-repeat capability is an outgrowth of Web’s ingenuity and determination to enhance our customers’ product offering,” says Business Development Manager Courtney Robinson.

Production efficiency

Variance-in-repeat printing streamlines manufacturers’ production by incorporating multiple different repeating designs on a single roll of nonwoven material. The printed roll can run on one personal care product manufacturing line, offering variety and simplicity.

With conventional nonwoven material printing and formatting services, product manufacturers seeking variations in design need to order several different rolls, each carrying a repetitive and uniform design, process the rolls on separate lines and then collate them.

Supporting a major manufacturer

“We recently brought our print engineering services into play to craft a design solution for a personal care product manufacturing customer,” Robinson says.

“The company turned to Web Industries for help in producing a more attractive feminine undergarment’s waistband. Web succeeded in printing three slightly different repeating designs on a single roll of extensible nonwoven material.”

Robinson adds that the variance-in-repeat capability enabled the manufacturer to package the three designs on the same production line. This eliminated the need to use three different lines and then later sort the designs. The result was greater manufacturing efficiency and a more appealing garment for consumers.

Web Industries Introduces Functional Ink Printing Capability

March 09, 2020

A new functional ink printing capability for communicating changes in a garment’s or material’s condition is now available from the Personal & Home Care business unit of Web Industries Inc., a precision formatter of flexible materials. The capability enables two- or three-part ink chemistries to be printed on nonwovens, paper, tissue, films, or textiles to signal a change in material condition. It is designed for personal care items including incontinence wear, diapers and feminine hygiene products, but also has potential uses in industrial applications.

Functional ink refers to printed coatings that register a change when exposed to reagents such as moisture. The change could involve fading or becoming a different color, releasing a telltale odor or triggering an increase or decrease in temperature. Web Industries’ Fort Wayne, Ind., printing facility can apply functional ink coatings to a variety of materials on behalf of manufacturing customers.

“Functional ink is all about providing information to product users,” says Business Development Manager Courtney Robinson. “Garments or materials printed with functional ink indicate changes and can prompt corrective actions. Personal care product manufacturers, for example, can employ functional inks to indicate the status of incontinence wear, where the ink will fade or alter color when exposed to moisture, alerting caregivers to change the garment.”

Industrial Applications

Functional ink coatings also have a wide range of industrial uses. “The ability to build chemical or bio-reactive markers directly into personal protective equipment or other product components can provide an added level of awareness and safety for first responders and other users,” Robinson notes. “For instance, a tailored coating could be applied to specific areas of single-use hazmat suits that would change color to indicate the presence of specific levels of a contaminant. By providing passive monitoring during an emergency situation, these ‘sensing areas’ would allow the wearer to focus on their specific task while knowing that their exposure to harmful chemicals or bio-agents was being assessed.

“Another high-potential use is in industrial control systems,” Robinson said. “For instance, an electrically-conductive functional coating could be applied to a substrate that breaks down in the presence of excessive heat. Used as a sensor component, an overheating condition would cause the material to degrade, breaking the electrical connection and signaling the equipment’s PLC/computer.”

Web Industries Launches WebPrecisionPlus™ Printing, Slitting/Traverse Winding Capability for Consumer Brands and Contract Packagers

April 06, 2020

A new multipronged solution for consumer brands and contract packagers that combines high-quality printing and precision slitting/traverse winding is now available from Web Industries Inc., an outsource manufacturer and precision formatter of flexible materials. The new offering, called WebPrecisionPlus™, incorporates brand-enhancing flexographic printing with precision narrow-width slitting and tightly controlled traverse winding, or spooling.

Potential applications exist in the food, pet food, household and personal care sectors, and anywhere else goods are marketed in flexible packaging. A few examples: narrow tear strips for small tissue packages, mid-size drawstrings for trash bags, and wide overwraps for the packaging of beverages and towels.

“WebPrecisionPlus enables consumer brands and contract packagers to create colorful, eye-catching flexible packaging while achieving greater production efficiency,” says Web’s Adrienne Green, director of sales, Personal & Home Care. “It allows businesses to outsource certain challenging printing, slitting and winding operations entirely to Web. The companies can then focus greater attention on their core product manufacturing and packaging activities. Options include complete printing, slitting and winding; slitting and winding only or roll-to-roll printing of master rolls of material.

Wide-web printing

Web Industries’ wide-web printing capability—92 inches wide for single-color printing, 62 inches wide for eight colors—features 100% vision inspection paired with high-resolution cameras to inspect the full web while printing. The vibrant, high-quality printing helps promote brand preference for packaged goods on retail shelves and online, wherever needs exist to capture customer attention. Web prints on a huge variety of packaging substrates including paper, paperboard, film, foam, nonwovens, laminated materials and substrates with overprint varnishes (OPV). Brands can select either water-based or solvent-based ink systems according to their preference.

In addition, Web supports the use of “functional inks,” a growing category. These inks alter their color or appearance when exposed to moisture, sunlight or another agent. This can communicate a promotional message or convey a change in a material’s or garment’s condition, such as a wet diaper.

Precise slitting/winding

WebPrecisionPlus’ slitting and traverse winding operations produce large rolls that easily integrate into packaging lines. Web Industries precision slits materials to widths as narrow as 1 millimeter up to 12 inches wide and then traverse winds them onto spools to extend the customers’ production run time. Accuracy ranges to ±.003 inches for stiffer materials.

The slit material is then traverse wound, or spooled, under the supervision of Web technicians. Each winding pattern custom fits its application. Dynamic tension control and accurate winding prevent material damage and reduce the risk of foldovers and jams on packaging lines.

Once installed, the large rolls feed thousands of linear feet of material to packaging lines and can run 10 hours or more without a roll change. This cuts material waste and needs for splicing during a production run.

In addition, the larger rolls deliver sustainability advantages. A single large roll produces less packaging waste than multiple smaller pad rolls.

Web Industries Omega Systèmes Earns French General Directorate of Armament approval for COVID-19 Facemask Production

April 09, 2020

Omega Systèmes, a Web Industries company, is shipping 900,000 personal facemasks approved by the French General Directorate of Armament to the Ministère des Armées for distribution to food manufacturers, supermarkets and nursing homes conducting business in France.

Obtaining the French General Directorate of Armament approval for mask production called for Omega to pass a series of tests carried out in accordance with stringent Armament specifications, including those for wearer protection.

The announcement comes at a time when demand for the facemasks is high throughout France. Prime Minister Édouard Philippe has extended COVID-19 containment measures until April 15th, as the number of infections in France exceeds 81,000 with more than 10,800* deaths in hospitals. The masks are being supplied by the Ministèred Armées to businesses whose personnel are at a high risk of contamination, such as those working in the food sector and facilities housing the elderly. These single-use masks can be worn for up to four hours before being changed and offer a 96% protection rate.

To meet this demand, Omega is operating around the clock, running three eight-hour shifts to produce more than 150,000 masks per day. The company plans to fulfill orders for more than 4 million masks per month.

According to Web Industries Vice President of Corporate Development Kevin Young, Omega converted parts of its Nantes France operation from aerospace component manufacturing to the production of facemasks to assist France’s overall fight against the coronavirus.

“We are allocating assets and running multiple shifts at our plant to support the government and the people of France during this time of pandemic,” he said. “We’ll continue facemask production for as long as needed, and we’ll be looking for additional opportunities to help.”

Omega Systèmes is making every effort to address the urgency of COVID-19 by developing prototypes of individual protective masks and then putting the designs into mass production in an extremely short time frame. At the same time, the company has put in place reinforced measures to ensure the safety of personnel. Omega Systèmes is equipped to produce and supply the essential elements in the fight against Coronavirus for as long as demand exists.

The new production line adds capacity to serve growing demand for both thermoset and thermoplastic slit tape composites from aerospace fabricators across the European market.

The 48-head line is the first of many that Web Industries expects to install at Omega Systèmes, which was acquired by Web in January 2019. The line’s custom slitting and spooling capabilities mirror those of Web’s North American precision converting operations, enabling the company to offer identical formatting services and quality standards to customers on both sides of the Atlantic. The new line can take master rolls of composite materials, precision slit them into narrower widths and then traverse wind the slit material onto spools. Customers can then easily load these spools of slit tape onto their robotic automated tape laying machinery or other fabrication equipment.

“We are entering an era in which competition will intensify, and production optimization will be an increasingly important factor in productivity gains,” said Web Industries Vice President of Corporate Development Kevin Young “The new machinery we have developed and implemented can format both thermoset and thermoplastic composite materials to supply the entire European market.”

With this capacity investment, Web Industries is deploying resources to help customers meet composite material requirements for next-generation aircraft programs. These programs are expected to drive a surge in manufacturing of single-aisle airplanes with significant composite content. “We are focused on this challenge and are working with material suppliers, automation developers and fabricators to find new approaches that deliver improved yields, increased throughput and lower cost,” said Michael Quarry, vice president of aerospace operations, Web Industries.

Web Industries donates reusable fabric face masks to Springfield, Mass., Mental Health Association Inc.

July 21, 2020

Web Industries Inc., a precision formatter of flexible materials and a contract manufacturer, has donated 500 reusable fabric masks to Mental Health Association Inc. (MHA), a nonprofit organization based in Springfield, Mass., that provides 24/7 residential care and person-centric services for individuals challenged by developmental disabilities, brain injury, mental health, homelessness and substance use.

MHA care providers and staff are essential workers who cannot work remotely and are in close contact with the people they serve. According to MHA’s Kimberley A. Lee, vice president, resource development & branding, MHA workers have been required to wear masks on duty since the pandemic began, usually paper masks that were discarded after every shift.

An article in a local publication alerted Lee to Web Industries. She reached out and was put in touch with Web’s Vice President of Corporate Development & Medical Kevin Young. After learning about MHA’s mission, Young quickly sent a shipment of 500 washable, reusable fabric masks to the organization.

“When the masks arrived, we were impressed with their design, comfortable fit and cutouts to accommodate different sizes,” says MHA’s Lee. “I was the first to wear one to a meeting, and as soon as the meeting ended, there was a line of staff members outside our supply room waiting for their new masks.”

Lee says the masks are extremely lightweight and breathable compared to the disposable masks. Also, because the masks are washable, they can be used multiple times.

“There are always challenges involved in operating a nonprofit, but the COVID-19 pandemic has added to these challenges by orders of magnitude,” says Lee. “This generous gift of masks from Web Industries provides mission-critical personal protective equipment for our employees at a time when it’s difficult to source PPE, let alone pay for it. We are extremely grateful.”

“This seemed a perfect opportunity to help out an organization and a group of caregivers that perform essential work in the community,” says Web’s Kevin Young. “As a U.S.-based contract manufacturer with expertise in converting flexible materials of all kinds, Web finds itself well positioned to support the demand for PPE products like masks and for test strips to help fight the pandemic.”

Surge in COVID-19 test production, new hires at Holliston plant

The donation to MHA comes amid Web’s shift in manufacturing to increased production of PPE-related products and LFI (lateral flow immunoassay) COVID-19 test devices. Web recently announced a multi-million dollar equipment investment at its Holliston, Mass., Lateral Flow Diagnostics Center. Web projects production of 1 million LFI tests per week by the first week of September and 2 million tests per week by January 2021.

The company is in the process of hiring 125 new employees at Holliston, including bio scientists, engineering personnel, equipment operators, quality assurance, administrative personnel and purchasing specialists.

Web Industries will highlight Creo-enabled MLI solutions for space/satellite applications at virtual Small Satellite Conference 2020

July 31, 2020

Web Industries Inc., a precision formatter of flexible materials for space and aerospace applications, will highlight its capability to design and manufacture thermal insulation blankets and micrometeoroid shielding products at Small Satellite Conference 2020, August 3-6. Normally held at Utah State University, Logan, Utah, this year’s SmallSat will take place entirely online due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Space and aerospace OEMs and other visitors registered for SmallSat are invited to meet online with Web Industries officials at one of four designated time slots during the conference. All meetings are individual and confidential. Web engineers will be on hand to meet at the following times: 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, Monday, Aug. 3, through Thursday, Aug. 6. (For more information and to register for SmallSat, visit www.smallsat.org.)

At SmallSat, Web Industries will showcase its multilayer insulation (MLI) blankets and formatted materials for thermal management tasks aboard satellites and space vehicles. MLI blankets are lightweight components consisting of multiple layers of film or foil that reflect radiated heat energy, offering exceptional performance in space environments.

In a new development, Web is employing Creo CAD software for the first time in its design of MLI blankets. The software enhances Web’s ability to process three-dimensional images and convert them into two-dimensional shapes, resulting in MLI blankets that more closely conform with dimensional requirements.

“During SmallSat, Web representatives plan to address certain key issues of interest to space/satellite OEMs as part of the virtual meeting framework,” says Web’s Business Development Manager for Thermal Insulation Lee Smith. “These include efforts to speed turnaround and reduce cycle times in MLI blanket production, the benefits of increasingly automated MLI manufacturing, and the ability to supply finished blankets with integrated fasteners directly to the launch pad.”

In addition, Web will exhibit its proven capability to design and manufacture micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) shielding products. High-velocity MMOD particles pose a serious risk of damage to satellites and space vehicles, especially in low Earth orbits. MMOD shields consist of multiple layers of Kevlar® and other high-strength materials. Successive shield layers break up MMOD particles on contact and prevent debris from damaging the spacecraft.

NOTE TO MEDIA: Media members and trade editors interested in learning more about Web Industries’ solutions for space applications are asked to contact Web Industries outside of SmallSat conference hours to arrange a phone or Zoom meeting.
